What a great run! I thoroughly enjoyed DJing in the public, producing mixes and making new friends. I want to say thank you to all the people who supported me, taught me about DJing and provided feedback over the past 3 years.

Along with rock bands, a successful live pa (Mint) and DJing I have been seriously involved in making/playing music for over 16 years. My desire now is to devote more time to my family, career, ministry and other hobbies.

This weekend I am playing for Pete's (TWBP owner) birthday party that happens to be 7-7-07. I am excited and hope I do well. I am also doing a sort of "Best of This Week at Beatport" mix. What does deep house mixed at 130 bpm sound like?

Howdy everyone,

So you love deep house yet sometimes you what something with a little more movement...a little faster. I was wondering the other day what it would sound like if I really pushed up the bpm (beats per minute) to 130. Last night I had some extra energy (caffeine) and decided to record a quick half hour deep house set mixed at 130 bpm. Most of the mixes are good, some small slippage yet please provide your feedback about the sound and flow of fast, deep house.

Playing somewhere new...be prepared!!!

Aloha fans of rhythmic sonic waves!

As some of you may have read, I played in El Paso Texas a few weeks ago. (Great show by the way!) I had never played there before and wanted to play well and connect with the crowd...you know make them shake what the good Lord gave them.

I had a few things in mind to hopefully accomplish this objective. First, if you are anything like me, getting comfortable behind a new DJ set-up is essential to having fun and playing well. When playing somewhere new there are always new challenges; equipment you are not familiar, awkward placement mixer/turntables/CD decks, the booth monitor position and many different factors. The fun is trying to overcome those challenges and rock the party!

Personally for me, the position of the booth monitor and being able to hear everything is my first priority. I cue (listen) to the incoming track in my right ear and listen to the booth monitor out of my left ear. I find most people are opposite. The sooner my ears adjust and I can balance the volume in my ear and the headphones the sooner I can get into my groove.

So here is my solution...I build a mini 5 track set to start. Before the gig, I will dial in the bpms, tempo settings and mix in timing. This provides some direction and confidence to start my set.

Yet here is a huge factor to consider...knowing what the crowd wants to hear. You ask, "Geoff, how can I know what the crowd wants to hear before I even get there, especially if the gig is out-of-town." Well I ask the promoter to tell me about the event, what style the other DJs will be playing, and what time slot I have. If you are a peak hour DJ and the promoter is booking you for one of the opening sets, either you need to prepare some early evening, warm up tracks or you might ask the promoter why he wants peak hour music early in the evening. The more you know about the theme of the club or the expectations of the promoter will help improve your enjoyment of time behind the decks. Of course this is irrelevant if you where solely booked for your particular style.

So you nailed the first 5 mixes and the crowd is going crazy... job well done. What if after your first 5 prepared tracks the crowd isn't quite jumping for joy. This is where you have to start throwing some new sounds at them to find out what direction to take the crowd. I prepared primarily a progressive set for my gig in El Paso yet the place wasn’t quite feeling it. I decided to play some housier tracks and suddenly the dance floor was filled and I had them in the palm of hand. From there I was pulling the funkiest house tracks and was able to put smiles on there faces and mine.

Being prepared and being flexible will make the difference between a good set and a great set. I am excited about my experience in El Paso and what I learned. I hope this as been informative or at least entertaining.

I hope everyone is getting into the Christmas season. It is actually cold today in Arizona so it helps getting into a festive mood. Our family has put up the Christmas tree, hung lights on the house and started some shopping for the kids so no turning back now.

I have a new set over on This Week at Beatport. I love the music and the programming really moves. Unfortunatley I did not nail all the mixes. Some were a bit off yet it is very honest. You can also find the tracklisting for my set at This Week at Beatport. Make sure to download other sets especially Pete Smalls, the host. His sets are built using Ableton Live and he does a great job.

El Paso was a blast!

For those who may not have heard, I played down in El Paso last Wednesday. It was a great night to shake your booty right before Thanksgiving. Promoter Joey and the crew (Half Moon Entertainment) who brought me out are first class people. I was very honored to play at their new location at Fat Mary's. Rick(Lush DJ) and Joey(Sol B) opened up and were fanatastic, dropping progressive, electro and some dnb which was awesome. After feeling out the crowd I dropped some house and it all broke lose. People were dancing even after the lights went up.

The Deep House Mix v. The Progressive House mix

Aloha,

I have recently been asked to play a night that is geared more towards progressive house fans. So last night I figured I would practice a bit and spin only progressive house compared to my typical deep house. I am sure for some of you this is a no brainer yet spinning these two genres are completely different in terms of working the transitions and length of the actual mix.

Most deep house tracks carry the melody and bassline almost to the very end of the track whereas progressive house breaks down much earlier. It leads me to wonder if a producer's song structure is influenced by how the DJ actually uses the track. I know when I produced dance music, before I became a DJ, all my DJ friends were asking me to extend the intros and outtros to allow for longer mixing. I am constantly reminded of mistakes I made in producing tracks by the very things that frustrate me now about certain tracks.

OK back to the topic. Deep house mixes are shorter, creating either exciting shifts during the mix or short seamless transitions. Progressive house mixes succeed with the length of the mix and integration of both tracks elements producing a short musical play between both tracks. So what is essential for great progressive house mixes you ask...great beat matching. All good DJing starts with clean, consistent beat matching. Spinning progressive house and striving for the perfect 2 minute mix will definitely test your beat matching skills and your ear for more intricate programming.

Song selection and creating an enjoyable listening experience

Howdy!

So I am planning my next mix and thought I would share some thoughts about my process. Much of my process I have to attribute to what I have learned from Dave Epstein and Jon Boy; two good friends who were willing to listen to my first couple of mixes.

Mood…what kind of mood do I want to create? What kind of mood am I in when thinking of a new mix? What was the mood of my last mix? Do I want to go big and make a peak hour set or select tracks with an emphasis on drums? Do I want to go deep and groovy? The mood of the mix is where I start.

Once I figure out what mood I want to create in the mix, I start previewing tracks and making a list of tracks that fit that mood. At this point there is no programming,(order of the tracks) just a list. I have perhaps 30 tracks I haven't used in other mixes so it takes time to weed out stuff and try to remember tracks that worked well when I played out.

Once I have a list to work off, I decide what direction I want to take inside the mix. So many mixes start mellow and build and that’s it. I have tried to create valleys or the “up and down the mountain” type of mix. Typically I try to establish a great opening track and start looking for tracks that mesh well. I am always looking for the next track to either move the energy up or down depending on what effect I am trying to create in the flow.

Jon Boy had a great piece of advice...place your big, showcase tune about 3/4 of the way to the end. This track doesn't have to be some big, peak hour monster. You know, its the track that just rocks your world. This is the track that you are driving the listener to and then beyond.

Dave said he likes to throw in a "curveball" track that works with the theme yet is strange or different. This is tough because most of us select and buy tracks that drive within the guardrails of our style. For my deep house mixes, this might be where I drop a crazy tech house groover that sticks out from the other tracks. The real talent comes in selecting the right tunes.

Selecting the right tunes is truly the least recognized talent of the club/rave DJ. Song selection is your style yet basically its your ability for programming. DJ sets typically are most enjoyable when the tracks work together and can take a listener on a ride. The whole "take the listener on a journey" is a bit over used for what can be accomplished on an eighty minute CD. When I think of a journey, thoughts of an eight hour set performed in a club rings more true.

Getting booked as a DJ

Aloha,

Occasionally I am asked about how to get booked as a DJ, playing in clubs, lounges and/or bars. It can be tough for up and coming DJs to learn the industry and how to get started. Below are some ideas that may be helpful when you are ready to move from the bedroom to the club. I am not saying this is a complete list, just things I have learned and have worked for me.

1) Play every show you can at first, even if there is no pay involved. The experience will pay off.

2) Get to know the promoters and DJs that run and operate your local record shop. Most promoters and DJs that work in the local record shop are available during the day. It is hard to strike up a conversation about your demo in a loud, busy club.

3) Your demo cd...make it honest! Don't fix your mix with software. So your first decent demo has a bad or sloppy mix. Keep it! Over time as you work on your skills, your improvement will be recognized and hopefully rewarded.

4) When scouting a club, make sure your musical style matches with what the patrons want to hear. "Will people in this lounge want to hear happy hardcore?" "Will people in this dance club want to hear trippy IDM?"

5) Be seen! Club promoters and DJs typically book people they know and can trust. It takes time to get to know people yet people do business with people, not strangers.

6) Be honest if someone asks you how many people will come out to see you play. If you know that only 5 of your best friends will make it out than “5” is what you say to the promoter. Bottom line, be honest with people.

7) Make sure you show up on time and touch base with the promoter a few days before the show. This lets the promoter know that you are dependable and serious about what you do.

8) Use the internet! With all the opportunities to meet people, upload your mixes and network, the internet can be a great way to let people know who you are.

9) Know your price! If you are going to meet a promoter or DJ that might book you, be ready to tell them how much you charge. This is tough sometimes to figure out. Depending on how long they want you to play, I would say $50 is a good starting point. If you have friends that DJ on a regular basis, they should be able to give you some insight into what to charge.

10) Always have demos on you, where ever you go. You never know who you will meet.

The July Mix - Deep to Tech

Hello Everybody,

Well here in Arizona the temperature is over 100, I have picked a new monthly residency and have a new mix for you. Hopefully this mix will bring a smile to your face as you hang out at the pool, the beach or work. Wouldn't it be nice if adults had long summer breaks like when we were in school.

The July mix brings together two fun genres; deep house and tech house. I was surprised how many tracks I selected for this mix that have vocals. I typically only buy dub or instrumentals yet I had some great vocal tracks to showcase. All tracks can be purchased for legal download at beatport..

Zip tie fix for Sony Headphone

Hello,

My good friend Dave Epstein gave me some advice on how to keep my Sony MDR-V700 headphones from cracking around the earphone stem. Use small plastic zip ties and use a criss cross configuration. I would suggest doing this as a preventative measure. I was really bummed when my last pair cracked. Hopefully this will reduce the possibility of that happing again. Below are some pictures of my headphones.

Happy Easter!

Thank you for everyone's feedback recently to my decision to change from a monthly mix to a quarterly mix. The April mix has some great new music and my mixing is pretty good. The tracklisting is listed below in case you want to add one or two songs to your collection. I currently buy all my music from Beatport.com.

As some of you may know I use to buy all my music from EDM Digital. When I made the transition from progressive to deep house, I started buying my music from clickgroove.com and Beatport. I recently visited EDM Digital to find out they have stopped operations. It is unfortunate because they had a great website and was able to attract some very solid producers.

Aloha Everyone,

Well you may be wondering where the April mix is and when will I post it and podcast it. I have decided to try to drop one new mix every quarter. You think it would be easy to record one mix a month. I have some things in my life that have taken a priority over the monthly mix. For those who have gotten accustomed to a mix very month, I apologize. I do have a new mix in the works, so hang tight. I love DJing, finding new music and continue to spin weekly at Furio in Scottsdale.

Howdy everyone!

Back to some funky deep house to get your body moving! Thank you for everyone who posted their feedback for February's mix. The March mix was a lot of fun to put together. Most of these tracks have proven to be solid room movers over at Furio for my weekly residency.

The past couple of weeks have been tough to keep my regular Thursday night because of work therefore I have been spinning on Saturday nights. Definitely a different feel with people ready hear things kicked up a notch on Saturday nights. I am very thankful and appreciative for the flexible management at Furio. It helps that I am the only DJ they have employed to play.

I have some great tunes lined up for April. See you then.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The two hour set for the New Year has finally arrived. This mix includes tracks I just bought weeks ago and tracks I have been playing for the past three months at Furio. Thank you for the feedback emails, they are very encouraging.

This two hour set allowed me the ability to really move things around. Having the recent experience of spinning 4 hours straight every Thursday at Furio has been beneficial in regards to incorporating different themes/sounds to a mix. I hope you enjoy the music. Again, I have to give a lot of credit to the producers of the tracks I spin.

I will be spinning at e4 in Scottsdale for New Year's Eve. e4 has four rooms and I will be in the earth room from 10pm-2am. You can check out their website at e4-az.com.

The August Mix for November

I have recently received some emails asking me to post my August mix. I recently changed hosting companies because I was blowing out my bandwidth limit. I had to take down some of my older mixes. With my recent weekly residency and work related activities, it has been difficult to dedicate some real time to the November mix. Bam! Problem solved. I give you the August mix.

There will be no mix in December allowing me to prepare for a two hour mix I will release for New Year's Eve which hopefully will be picked up by some internet radio stations.

Hello and Welcome to September...It is a bit tough to be excited about music and DJing while people in New Orleans and the surrounding area are experiencing some of the toughest days of their lives. My prayers go out to all the people in that area.

September mix coming soon

Hello and Happy Friday! This is the big weekend...I am going to record the September mix. Just to inform some of you new to the Mint DJ Monthly mixes...I do not re-record my sets or fix any user errors i.e. bad mixes. What you get is exactly what I sound like in a club or lounge. Some months are better than others depending on my mixing abilities for that given mix session.

I do clean up the audio file if there is a small pop, click or skip from the hard drive.

I am experiencing a gentle dug from the deep house sound. I am sure you will hear some new sounds this month. My goal is to provide a one hour mix that will be groovy and smooth whether you are at work, chilling by the pool or taking a late night drive.

I saw Coldplay last night....simply amazing! If you dig this group, I highly recommend seeing them live. They rock!

The August Mix....my best mix ever!!!!

IT IS HERE! I finally deliver on a mix with supreme mixing skills and exciting programming. I am really looking forward to your comments about this mix. This also the first time I dropped some progressive breaks into a monthly set.

The podcast is longer (2 hours) than months past due to the new feature...a guest mix. Dave Epstein is up for the first guest mix. Dave is the DJ would taught me how not just to spin records but techniques and skills that create smooth, intelligent mixing. First off….thank you for all the great feedback. I really do appreciate it. After reading an email from my new friend in Greece, Stratos, I got super motivated and recorded a set that night. That set will be the mix for August. I believe the new August mix is best set I have ever recorded. The mixing is super tight and the programming is a lot of fun.

I will also have a new feature for August....a guest mix. Dave Epstein who is the responsible person for teaching me how to DJ will provide a guest mix for August. It will be attached as one big mix.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the delay. Over the 4th of July weekend, my best friend Jeff and I were working out the web server stuff. The July mix is fair compared to past mixes. Don't get me wronmg, the music is top notch of course yet the mixing is a bit sloppy. My day job and traveling has paid a toll on my practicing and it shows. There are a few tight mixes for your enjoyment. I also realized I have fallen back into some old habits that have hindered my mixes from being exciting. Next month's mix will be much better.

Hello! I want to thank everyone for the downloads and the feedback. Since I have posted the May mix back on May 6th, I have received 359 dowloads/subscription feeds. I think podcasting is working out great in regards to sending out the monthly sets.

I would also like to personally thank F Naqvi of Quadrata for the email. These guys produced "Commute" from the April Mix. "Commute" has a great dark vibe to transition my mix into some harder tunes. The May Mix!

Aloha, and welcome to another monthly installment of Mint DJ's monthly mix. The May mix definitely includes some sounds that are new to my typical style. I had fun programming this set yet realized some mixing styles used for progressive house does not translate to the deeper stuff. Yes, this is a learning process. The first two mixes are fair but the rest are really solid. This mix should be fun for listening or dancing around the house.

My new weekly position as the opening DJ at Suede (Progression Thursdays) has been giving me some great experience. Last night was fun. I will post some pics soon.

Hard work pays off!!!

I am now the opening DJ at Progression Thursdays at Suede in Scottsdale, Arizona. Since my passion within progressive house music falls on the early night/groovy stuff, it was a perfect fit. I had been frustrated many of times when the opening DJ is banging it out and not properly warming up the people. I now have the opportunity to fix that problem.

I am very thankful that Matty and Eric trust me to get things started right. This opportunity will give me weekly experience of playing on a good sized sound system, learn how to read a crowd and hone my skills. Mixing in a bedroom and mixing in a club is night and day.

I also want to say thank you for the comments/feedback, online and offline, I have received about the April mix. Work has begun on the May mix.

Mint DJ's April Progressive House Mix

The wait is over for your fix of Mint DJ's new progressive house mix. I humbly apologize for the delay. Two factors....I have purchased two new CD decks and I have been working on a new original track.

I recently purchased two new Pioneer CDJ-200S. You can check out the new decks here. These CD decks are really cool. The jog wheel has a very smooth feel and has a very accurate response, much like vinyl.

The new tune is almost done. Rost from Delikate Imposters has been giving me some feedback that has led to some adjustments. I will post the tune when it is finished.

The April mix....I am very excited about this mix. It really came together nicely, especially with me getting familiar to some new gear. Again, all the tracks on this mix was purchased from EDM Digital. This set has a smooth ride with some good twists and turns. Please any feedback would be welcomed. The track listing is below.

Happy March to ya! Yes I took some time off the monthly mixes to work on an original tune. It came out really good and hopefully will be available to purchase on EDM Digital soon.

The March mix came out really solid. The first mix is a bit off but the rest is really strong. (Lesson to self, warm up a bit before recording monthly set.)

See the the little icon to the lower right that says "feeds?" If you are into podcasts than you can drop that link into you podcast application and get your Mint DJ fix whenever I send one out.

What is a Podcast? This link may be helpful to explain if I don't get it right. Basically, people all over the world are creating....creating radio shows, talk shows, news, poetry and of course music. You can subscribe for free to receive content from people as they upload it. Your podcast application will receive the "created content" whenever it is ready, downloads it to your computer and you can than listen to it. You have to subscribe to the feed so don't worry about spam.

Where do I get my tunes?

Occasionally I get asked this question, "Where do you get your tunes?" I primarily shop from EDM Digital, www.edmdigital.com. They have some great tunes, a very functional interface and great prices. I have a particular sound I am going after and have not been disappointed with the selection. Some of the other places I have purchased tracks from include Beatport and 3Beat Digital.

Practice Concentration!!!

Well, I had a chance to show what I am made of last night when I played at Suede for the new Thursday Nights of Progression. Great move for Matty and Eric to move their successful night from Furio to Suede! I look forward to many fun nights.

The first six-seven mixes were flawless and than I proceeded to nose dive into bumbling beats and sloppy mixes. I truly think I let one minor fix on ONE mix completely wreck my confidence for the rest of the set. I wanted to finish strong last night yet I learned that I need to be mentally tougher. I need to practice concentration beyond 45 minutes of practice. I want my 3rd mix to be tight just like my 9th mix. More practice! More practice! It was a very growing experience and have fond memories of the first hour.

The December Mix

Merry Christmas everyone! Well another year that flew by. I think '04 will be the year I decided to make DJing a priority and work hard. Well I had a lot of great responses to the November Mix. I have been feeling like I am really getting there. The December Mix has told me, "not quite yet, punk!" I could have recorded a new mix until it was perfect but that wouldn't be honest. The reason for this blog was to show growth and to be true to where I am at as a DJ.

Don't get me wrong, the second half of the set is really solid and I am very proud of it. The first half, as you will hear, has some bumps in the road. I spun last night at my very good friend's house, Rost. I realized that I need to use monitors with a bigger low end response to give consistency to my mixes. It is much easier picking up the slight changes in tempo when the kick drums are full.

Well enough on my wacky DJ ramblings. I hope everyone has a great holiday season. Be on the look out for better stuff in 2005.

I appreciate all the words of encouragement for my latest mix. The mix recently was added to www.desertfm.com, a website with lots of DJ sets and featured shows. This is exciting to get some great music out. Being a producer primarily first, I fully realize a DJ is only has good as the music he selects and plays. My best mix to date!

Well, I think I finally put together a solid mix. I have been working very hard to tighten up my beatmatching. I guess spinning in front of a crowd for two hours, once a week is starting paying off. I concentrated less on programming and matching keys yet the mix came together nicely. Again, I have to thank Dave Epstein for his guidance and support. I continually learn from Dave who has so much knowledge to give. Hopefully this mix will make Dave proud to have me as his student.

Gilbert Drop-In

Last thursday night I spun at my friend Ben's drop-in. Ben is a youth group leader in Gilbert. It is a weekly place for kids to come skate, hang out with friends, do homework or play games. I got to spin for two hours and time flew by. I was in the zone that night with only a few minor fixes. This event will be every Thursday night. What a great opportunity for me to serve the Lord and get some great experience.

Most of the kids proboably wouldn't notice a great mix from a fair mix but I strive for perfect 2 minute slices of blended, sonic perfection. Hopefully I will get a chance to record a session for everyone to hear. On these nights I try to keep the sound very housey and fun.

I am very pleased with the improvement of my mixing and track selection. DJ Jon Boy(http://www.4thdimensiondjs.com) gave me some wise and inspiring advice on programming a set that has flow and excitement with the ability to take the listener from point "A" to point "B." A proper set-up!

I recently upgraded my set-up in the studio to accommendate some new equipment. I have to thank and credit Dave Epstein (http://www.4thdimensiondjs.com/) with the idea of using Organized Living's custom shelving unit to make a killer DJ set-up. I will be posting a pic soon.

I am starting to look at opportunities to spin in Colorado while I am there for Christmas. Why not take advantage of being in another state to spread the sound of some good music.

Feel free to post any comments about the mix I have posted down below. I guess I should start referring to the Septmeber mix as the "October Mix" since it has taken a while to get my computer fixed. Thank you Rost.

Went to Furio last night

Rost, one of the producers of the Delikate Imposters, and I went out to Furio(www.furio.tv) last night for Progress Thursdays. In past months I have heard some solid music spun by solid djs. Last night wasn't the case at all. The two djs we saw rushed through every transition and seemed determined to play the commerical tracks that were released in 2002. Rost and I decided in wasn't worth hanging out since it looked like Matt from London West Recrods wasn't going to show up and save the night.

So I was home early and decided to spin some records in the studio to clear my head from the horrible music and mixing I heard. After about 5 solid mixes I was cured and went to bed. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to finish the Septemeber mix.

Hello and welcome to my first blog. This blog is really designed to recieve feedback from the DJ mixes that I compile and mix each month. I know it is September and I only have the August mix posted.
